Italian police arrest two of them for hacking the Leonardo Protection Group

ROM (Reuters) – A manager and a former Leonardo employee were arrested on Saturday for their alleged role in hacking the computers of the Italian Defense Group in order to steal confidential information between 2015 and 2017, prosecutors in the southern city of Naples said.

The arrests are a blow to Leonardo, who, in addition to his aerospace activities, also has a large cybersecurity department that NATO counts among his customers.

The company was not immediately available for comment.

Naples Prosecutor's Office said in a statement that a former employee of Leonardo's cyber security division was suspected of infecting 94 computers with malware in order to extract "classified information of significant value to the company".

The information was stolen because of "illegal targets that are still under investigation," the statement said.

The head of Leonardo's Cyber ​​Emergency Readiness Team, which was set up to protect the group from hacking attacks, has been placed under house arrest for allegedly interfering in evidence to derail the prosecution's investigation throw.

The police arrested the former employee, who is suspected of being directly responsible for the hacking.
