McIlroy hits Masters with a faulty shot

AUGUSTA, Ga. (Reuters) – Rorys McIlroy had his worst start to a Masters on Thursday, and while that could shape his psyche, the Northern Irish father may have felt the sting even more after being hit by one of his missed shots Son.

McIlroy, who shot a tee shot into a swimming pool at a match play event in Austin two weeks ago, hit his father with his second shot on the seventh par-4 hole en route to one of six bogies during a foursome in the left leg – over par 76.

Former number one in the world, hidden behind a tree to the left of the fairway and at an awkward angle into the green, screamed “in front” as his approach sailed to the other side of the fairway where he knew his father was standing.

“I knew it was my father when I aimed at him,” said McIlroy. “Probably 30 seconds before it hit him.”

McIlroy’s father seemed fine as he stepped away from the incident and even joked with a nearby reporter that he was going to ask his son for a signed glove.

“He’s seen me sign a lot of things over the years so I think that’s the least of his worries,” said McIlroy. “I think he just needs to put some ice on it, maybe I’ll sign a bag of frozen peas for him.”

For McIlroy, this week marks his seventh attempt to complete the career grand slam of the four golf majors, and what follows is an inconsistent stretch where bad play outweighs good magic.

At last year’s Masters, which was played in much softer conditions in November, McIlroy bounced back from the top 75 to finish fifth.
